Explanation of Common Ports

The following table lists the most commonly used communication ports for services, daemons, and programs included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This list can also be found in the /etc/services file. To view the official list of "Registered Dynamic Ports" established by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), refer to the following URL: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

"A layer" refers to whether a service or protocol uses TCP or UDP at the transport layer. If not listed, the service or protocol uses both.

The following ports are UNIX-specific and involve services ranging from email to authentication. The names within brackets (e.g., [service]) are the names of the service daemons or their common aliases.
