Scrypt, developed by renowned FreeBSD hacker Colin Percival for his backup service Tarsnap, is computationally intensive and memory-consuming, making parallel computation of multiple digests exceptionally difficult, thus increasing the difficulty of brute-force attacks using rainbow tables. Scrypt has not been widely adopted in production environments and lacks thorough examination and extensive library support. However, if the algorithm remains unbroken, scrypt's security should surpass PBKDF2 and bcrypt.
